Letter home: 23/10/2017
20th October 2017
I write to inform you that I have arrived at an important and difficult personal decision. I will be stepping down from my position as headteacher at Newman College next summer (August 2018).
As you will understand, this is not a decision I have taken lightly, after 17 years as a leader in Oldham Catholic schools, the past 10 of which have been served as headteacher. It has been my vocation, my aspiration and my goal since Newman College opened 6 years ago to lead the college to a position of credibility, stability and sustainable improvement. I believe we have now achieved this, the college enjoys a strong reputation due to the ethos, quality of leadership at all levels and to the quality of teaching, so the time has now come for a new headteacher to take the Newman family on to the next stage of its improvement journey.
I have made my decision known at this stage in order to afford the governors and Diocesan Trustees optimum time to recruit the most suitable replacement and to transition to the new leadership. Hence the headteacher’s position will go to advert today, Friday 20th October 2017. The governors and I are adamant that the process does not distract us from our ongoing improvement priorities and our longer term strategic aims.
Leading Newman College as headteacher since its inception has been the greatest privilege and honour of my professional career. I know I still have a lot to offer schools and education, for a number of years, and I relish the prospect of new challenges. There remains plenty yet to do and to achieve this year, which I very much look forward to, and I am blessed to have such a talented, committed and hardworking team of leaders, teachers and support staff. I thank you for your support over the past six years, and for the remainder of this vitally important year.
