Celebration Evening 2016
It was my great pleasure to say a final congratulation and goodbye to the Class of 2016. Their excellent results in the summer exams contributed significantly to the success of 2016, which is rapidly coming to a close. This group of students demonstrated a fabulous work ethic and commitment, setting the bar very high for years to follow. As I contemplate the successes of the calendar year, I am fiercely proud of all that the students, staff, governors and parents have achieved. All of us came in for richly-deserved credit in the Ofsted Inspection report in May.
The celebration evening was made all the more special thanks to the presence of Nicola White, Team GB Gold Medallist, for whom it has been an equally special and successful year.
Nicola delivered an inspirational speech to the Class of 2016. She explained that gifts and talents alone are not sufficient to bring about success. It is important to have a ‘vision’. She said the most successful sports stars commonly talk about ‘visualising’ what success looks like, whether that be scoring a goal, taking a wicket or scoring the final penalty in a shootout to win an Olympic gold medal!
“To have a vision, it is essential that you have high aspirations and, as you are encouraged to do at Newman College, to ‘dream big’. And I hope that I offer first-hand evidence that dreams come true for young people from Oldham as much as they do anywhere else.”
Thank you Nicola, and well done once again to the Class of 2016.
