On Monday 18th May, Newman RC College was proud to receive a visit from Oldham’s Mayor, Councillor Fida Hussain and the Mayoress Tanvir Hussain.
The Mayor and Mayoress were invited on a tour of the College with Headteacher, Mr McGhee and the newly appointed Head Girl, Aisling Sims and Head Boy, Barnabas Franklin. This was followed by presentations from 3 groups of pupils who are very proud to speak about their responsibility in the College and their social responsibility beyond the college
Firstly some Year 7 ambassadors delivered speeches about their role as ambassadors and how important the role is to them. Secondly, the College’s pupil Chaplains described their important work at Newman College and also in the wider community, such as their fund raising for the charity Caritas and their participation in liturgies and workshops in our Catholic partner primary schools.
Finally, the Newman RC Amnesty Group (the UK’s first Amnesty group in a Catholic School) delivered a presentation on the rights of homeless people and they launched a ‘selfie’ campaign. The campaign involves members of the Oldham Community completing the sentence ‘see homeless and think…’ and take a ‘selfie’. This is then tweeted to @NewmanRCAmnesty. The group hopes that this will raise awareness of the issue of homelessness and rough sleeping across Greater Manchester. Thus, allowing young people to show solidarity with those less fortunate than themselves.
Mr McGhee commented “We are very proud of the important roles our pupils wish to take on, the dignity that they show and the many ways in which they seek to serve the wider community. There are many initiatives at the College which demonstrate how blessed we are to have such thoughtful and responsible young citizens at Newman. We are delighted that the Mayor and Mayoress have been able to see examples of this today.”
