Premier League Reading Stars
Thursday 25th June saw the culmination of 12 weeks of wonderful work from a selected year 7 & 8 squad.
Parents and pupils gathered to celebrate the achievements of our very own esteemed Premier League Reading Stars. Miss Bradshaw and Miss Grange have been working tirelessly throughout the reading program, an intervention designed to increase the reading ages of pupils and to encourage pupils to read for pleasure. It uses Premiership football players as a means of engagement and provides pupils with excellent reading role models. PLRS has proven that: 3 out of 4 pupils make an average of 6 months progress on their reading age. 7 out of 10 participants have said they are now proud to be readers and the number of pupils who read every day has more than doubled.
At the heart of all literacy is reading. This is one of the most important factors in developing a child’s literacy and ultimately in maximising their potential. One ideal of the program was to open the eyes of pupils to the joys of reading. Staff here at Newman fully understand the benefits of reading to children but in addition to our own beliefs, research has clearly established a link between reading for pleasure and improved outcomes for pupils at school including improvements in writing.
The program involved a variety of activities such as ‘Team Selection’. This developed pupils’ abilities and confidence to choose appropriate books. ‘Poetry Slam’ encouraged a love of reading poetry using performance, improvisation and football poems. The study of newspapers and magazines highlighted the enjoyment to be had from a variety of reading materials other than books; developing pupils’ knowledge of both non-fiction and fiction through media. An away match-library visit developed pupils’ self-motivation and confidence in reading beyond the school environment. Visits to the college from star players developed reflective talk and exploration about what a good reading role model is.
