DofE 2023 Award Ceremony

On Thursday 7th December we welcomed 56 students and their parents and carers to Newman College to celebrate the achievements of our DofE students. We were honoured to be joined by our Special Guests, The Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester, Karan Lee and Pan Sleigh from DofE North of England, who presented students with their well earned certificates and badges.

At the event students were commended on their hard work. In order to achieve this Award, students have committed to volunteering, giving something back to the community. They have improved on their health and fitness by undertaking physical activity and they have developed a skill. They have completed these activities for at least an hour per week for between 3 and 6 months.

Students have also completed rigorous expeditions. Bronze Award students completed a qualifying expedition of 2 days and 1 night, with Silver students completing 3 days and 2 nights. Students had to prepare for these expeditions by attending weekly training sessions, where they learnt about map reading as well as how to pack a rucksack, pitch a tent and cook their own food. They put these skills into practice during the expedition.

Throughout their experience students have demonstrated strong leadership and teamwork. They have shown resilience and perseverance and fully deserve the recognition that this Award brings.

Well done to all involved.

Thank you also to the staff that have supported the students on their journey: Mr Grimley, Mr Borg-Fenech, Miss. Vallely, Mr Heslop, Mrs. Parkes, Mr. Green, Miss. Edwards, Mr. Yarr and Mrs. Harris.
