We are sure our whole community was saddened on Easter Monday to hear about the death of Pope Francis. A Pope known for being the People’s Pope, who inspired many with his gifts of service, humility and love.

When we joined back together as a Newman family, after our Easter holidays we have made sure we have both celebrated the life and guidance of Pope Francis, and informed our students on what happens next in the Church.

The staff joined in prayers for Pope Francis and the Church on Inset day; our students received a Celebration of the Word assembly on their first day back which offered prayers and the words of Bishop John on Pope Francis and his legacy; and we hosted a drop down morning on the 1st May to inform students of what happens next. During our drop down morning, students were taught about how the Church responds to the death of a Pope, outlined the wishes of the late Pope Francis and received an overview of what would happen with the conclave. Also many classes have written their own prayers and reflections for the Pope.

Both students and staff expressed gratitude for the pause in the usual school day to reflect and learn about such an important time in the Catholic Church. Students had a lot of their questions answered by our wonderful staff and are now excited to see who becomes our next leader of the Church.

We now join as a Catholic family in the wait for white smoke, when the Papal Seat is filled once more and the new Pope announced. After this we will ensure we celebrate our new Pope with our students.
