This academic year we have been delighted to work with King's College London, Cardiff University and GMP on a Police in Schools Trial. This research was based around GMP officers delivering PSHE topics in the student's PD lessons to see the impact of having police officers deliver these topics and the responses of the young people to the police officers. There were 3 lessons, a pre and post survey, student voice and a number of GMP officers for Years 7 and 8.
Some students stated:
I enjoyed being taught by the police as we got to do different activities and we get taught by a professional (not a teacher). The benefits of being taught by a police are me could learn more things in detail and things that teacher may not explain.
I enjoyed being taught by the police because he told us what is wrong and what would happen if you do it. The benefit of being taught by the police is that we know lots more things about the world and also have these things from the perspective of an actual policeman.
It was good to hear from people who deal with people's safety as their job.
We get to find out from a polices point of view on how we should keep ourselves safe at such a young age
I enjoyed that lesson because I want to be a police officer when older
King's College London and Cardiff University gave us the following feedback:
'
Working with Newman Roman Catholic College on our research project exploring the role of police in schools has been an exceptionally positive experience. From the outset, the staff and leadership have been welcoming and open to collaboration. They demonstrated a genuine interest in the goals of our research and went above and beyond to ensure the study captured student voice. The level of organization throughout the process has also made it easy for us to focus on the research itself, knowing that the logistical aspects were in capable hands.'

As researchers at Cardiff University, we are grateful to the staff and students of Newman Roman Catholic College who were really welcoming and enthusiastic in helping us with our research interviews. The visit to the school was wonderfully managed and well organised and this helped the day to run smoothly and allowed us to focus on learning about staff and student experiences. We appreciate the opportunity the school gave us to observe two lessons and interview staff and students, and we'd like to thank everyone involved for sharing such useful insights. Cardiff University
We are looking forward to seeing the final results of the research project and the impact this had on young people, not just in our schools, but across the country.
