A message from the Headteacher

Following on from the first half term, the endeavours of the College have been immensely successful. Blessed John Henry Newman Feast Day celebrations (October 9 2015) played a massively important role in the first half term and has enabled the Newman family to follow the example of our patron, John Henry Newman, through an act of love and service to others. Our Catholic ethos was expressed in the philanthropy of each and every student, as we raised a huge £6,295 for the Salford Diocese ‘Refugee Response’; thank you and well done to all who participated.

Within the first half term, the Amnesty International student group based in our college delivered a series of successful assemblies, highlighting the suffering currently taking place in regard to the refugee crisis. In addition, the Amnesty members organised a petition to preserve the UN Declaration of Human Rights. The group has grown significantly over the term and will no doubt continue to flourish.

The academic year of 2015 has been the most pleasing in terms of applications for prefects. The current year eleven cohort boasts the highest number of prefects that Newman College has ever known, clearly demonstrating the commitment of so many students to accept responsibility and to serve the college community.

Similarly, sports and extra-curricular activities so far this year have proved very successful. The Year 8 girls deserve a particular mention for progressing from being Greater Manchester Champions to the last 64 of schools nationally. We also have 103 Year 9 & 10 students enrolled on the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme. Here at Newman, we wholeheartedly encourage our pupils to go above and beyond to develop and achieve in all aspects of their lives.

Newman RC College is a place of commitment and hard work, where curiosity is ignited. We live and work in a community where all are welcome to celebrate our spiritual and academic pursuits. We are proud of our college.

School Inspection September 2015:

‘Students articulate a real sense of belonging. They are proud of their school, recognise the hard work and dedication of staff and value the range of opportunities offered to them to take on positions of responsibility and service as Student Chaplains, Caritas Ambassadors, Faith and Peace Group, Amnesty International Action Group.’

About our college

At Newman College we cultivate and celebrate our distinct Catholic nature through the promotion of ‘Dignity and Excellence’ for all members of our College family. John Henry Newman wrote ‘God has created me to do Him some definite service; He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission.’ Newman College is committed to placing faith at its centre, radiating the Gospel values of love, service, courage and reconciliation from the physical and spiritual heart of our learning community. ‘I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons’. At Newman College we celebrate collectively in our triumphs and we are united in our trials.
